 Tall characters don't seem to have enough room. I can't seem to type an A
 with two accents, but characters like that do exist. Non-latin may need
 more. Never mind this if the message area is already shrink-to-fit though.

 Meanwhile, lots of space is wasted on the gutters between messages.
 Probably all of that should go. Once the chat session has filled the
 screen, things would be most attractive if the non-message space were
 black. (one or two pixels between messages, plus rounded corners)
