 I get similar results with gst-launch on Joyride 277. This works:

   wget http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21521/spx/21521-01.spx
   gst-launch playbin uri=file:///root/21521-01.spx

 This doesn't:

   gst-launch playbin
 uri=http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21521/spx/21521-01.spx

 The latter seems to be play, but nothing can be heard.
