I looked into the GNOME implementation of startup notification and, as far
as I can tell, they are just using a timeout to detect startup failure (we
will need a longer one given our average startup time!). I think that's
the way we should go too, at least in the short time. And I'm not sure we
really need something smarter even in the longer term.
Unless someone disagree or has a better idea I'm going to write a patch
for it tomorrow. It should be pretty simple.
(Having a Close/Kill palette item is good too, but it's already covered by
another ticket.)
