 I chatted with Ivan about this bug and we came to the conclusion that we
 don't really know how to fix it. The problem is that activity launching
 failures are not in 1-1 correspondence with anything useful.

 We could try to get approximate data by waiting on the pid of the process
 we just created, then scanning the activity's log file for error-markers.

 Or we could add a UI-workaround by allowing the user to kill the flashing
 icons.

 Other thoughts?
