You mean write, don't you?
Based on that umask, the group can already read what was written.
777 (rwxrwxrwx) becomes 755 (rwxr-xr-x)
666 (rw-rw-rw-) becomes 644 (rw-r--r--)
Perhaps you're trying to open the file in a way that requires writing.
