 I tried downgrading to 249 and 247, but the problem remained.  I now
 suspect that it is in fact the q2d04 firmware that introduced this
 problem.  Also, the minimal recipe for working wireless seems to be:

 service NetworkManager? stop
 iwconfig eth0 essid the_essid
 dhclient eth0
