 I'm going to fork this bug, since it tracks multiple issues. The potential
 enhancements I can think of right now are:

 * remove the remaining blocking calls from the share/join process, by
 adding a method to PS Activity objects (#4757)

 * reduce code need to track activity members, by adding code in
 sugar.presence and the Presence Service (#4758)

 * reduce code needed to create new tubes (#4759)

 * reduce code needed to watch for tubes by moving some into sugar.presence
 (let's use this bug to represent this)
