 contained all there files, but for some reason the journal wasn't
 displaying them.

 The files that stored the index info were so messed that it took a
 longtime to read. So long that the journal connection to the DS timed out
 and it wouldn't recover from that time out.

 Activities started afterwards could connect to the DS faster, so it worked
 fine.

 I think we understand fully what happened and this can be closed, as we
 already took the needed actions (launching the DS with more precedence,
 making more robust the filesystem, and making saner the writes to the DS
 index).
