Comment:

I'm not convinced that encouraging rotation support by default is
necessary (although I think encouraging handheld mode by default
absolutely should be). Particular activities may indeed benefit from a
vertical aspect ratio, but not all. Furthermore, the buttons are not easy
to access when holding the screen vertically, so chances are it will be
more useful for all varieties of "reading" activities, or any activities
which naturally require little interaction. Now, having a touchscreen
''does'' fix that problem, but it doesn't change the fact that only some
activities can benefit from the vertical aspect ratio. As mentioned, it's
handheld mode that every activity ''must'' support to take advantage of a
 future touchscreen.

Also, has thought gone into whether or not rotation support is limited
only to handheld mode? It seems that rotating the screen is useless when
in laptop mode, and as such shouldn't be supported at all. The rotate
button is on the bezel and therefore accessible in handheld mode, so why
not? This prevents us from having to deal with rotation in Sugar unless
we see benefit. At present, I can't really see a use case in the OS which
would take advantage of it anyway, and propose that we only allow rotation
 from within handheld mode.

As far as the UI itself goes, please refer to #1049
