Comment:

 The problem was traced to an LCD display with a defective lightbar, which
 either through thermal expansion or manual flexing was shorting out and
 causing a very weird effect -- exactly as walter described above.

 When returned to Cambridge, the unit did not display any problems in 24
 hours of operation.  Manual flexing was able to duplicate the problem
 described above.

 This unit was hand assembled from the B3 plastics provided by Quanta, and
 the bottom unit from smithbone's old B2.  Unortunately, the LCD display
 from the B2 was also used, and it had a non-ECO'd display with a shorting
 lightbar.
