 One technique would be to have the firmware use the DCON to freeze the
 screen, and then have Linux unfreeze it at an appropriate time.

 You would not get any progress indications during the freeze, so this is
 probably not the very best we can do, but it is a quick hack that would
 get us part-way there in case we need to show something in a hurry.
