Comment:

 Dave Woodhouse has figured this one out -- the sync polarity was being set
 wrong by X, with the result that the DCON wasn't taking a snapshot.

 Switching from -HSync -VSync to +HSync +VSync in the xorg.conf gets DCON
 mode working.  The fix isn't that simple, though; we *should* have
 negative hsync/vsync, so the X driver is doing the inverse of what we ask
 for.
