I think that requiring a second button press may be a good idea. Pressing
the button once could pop up a visual, as Don proposes. This visual would
timeout after a few seconds, and pressing the rotate button again (or
perhaps any button other than a directional one) would actually dismiss
it. The popup itself would ask the kid to select the direction they want
up to be, clearly indicating the current orientation as well. That way,
you can never accidentally perform the action, there is always immediate
feedback, and it only ever takes 2 key presses to get to any orientation.
