 I am testing version 406. I must say that I see a lot of improvement, the
 new "mode" button that enables scientific calculation is a step in the
 right direction. As far as I can see it, I think that this bug can be
 closed.

 However, I may add another suggestion. People choose calculators based on
 their personal preference depending on what they do. I know this is sort
 of an overkill for the OLPC calculator, but I was wondering if it'd be
 possible to implement a sort of plugin system for this activity (or for
 all activities). In other words, if a student need would like to add some
 custom functionality, he could simply add a python plugin (similar to
 Firefox's addons). Right now the student could accomplish this by starting
 from the source of the activity. However if another student develops
 another function, the merging of the two functions to the same source may
 not be trivial. The system I propose would not have these conflicts.
