 There isn't any logic being performed by the kernel - it simply passes the
 backlight value along to the DCON (see
 http://dev.laptop.org/git.do?p=olpc-2.6;a=blob;h=4e0b3c87184fed9a5a8319f790cf7767084f9da1;hb=e4621c6a07262da46212e941242802d65d2cbdce;f=drivers/video/olpc_dcon.c#l104).

 If setting the same values results in different results, then it is
 probably faulty hardware (by luck or by design).  I recommend that
 somebody else try to recreate the issue, and we can triage from there.
