 I have an educated guess about what might be causing this problem,
 especially the part about crashing if you press the game key before the
 power button.

 I suspect that the code that generates "keyboard events" from game keys
 might be trying to add events to a queue before the queue has been
 initialized.  That might be overwriting other parts of system memory.

 I think that game keys should wait until the first keyboard reset command
 before generating events.
