 You don't seem to be getting it.

 If you don't claim copyright ownership, I have no way of knowing that
 others may or may not have other copyright rights to it.  This is why IBM
 would not use PD code, and why the MIT license got written in the first
 place.

 So the simplest way to solve all this is to preserve the existing
 copyrights and add a copyright of your own.  Then I don't have to go talk
 to lawyers, which I don't have time for right now.
