 I have a linksys wrt54g running dd-wrt.

 I found the source of the problem.  I have a Belkinwireless ethernet
 bridge which I use to connect my desktop machine.  When it is on, the olpc
 tries to connect to the mesh.  When it is off, the olpc connects to
 regular wifi.

 I don't know how the bridge works.  I run a program in windows that
 configures the bridge to connect to the wifi accesspoint, and then I can
 connect any machine to the ethernet jack on the bridge and it acts like
 the bridge is a router connected to my network.
