Comment:

 (I think the /usr is just a transcription error).

 OFW's ext2 filesystem reader has a bug in its handling of symlinks in the
 presence of extended attributes.  Build 366, at least, has extended
 attributes for the /boot/vmlinuz symlink, resulting in a misread of that
 file and probably others.

 The OFW bug is fixed by svn r229, files ofw/fs/ext2fs/{dir.fth,inode.fth}

 It might also be prudent to build the ext3 system images without extended
 attributes until the fixed firmware can be deployed widely.
