 Ok, here's something to try, having talked to Florian Schmidt (tapas), in
 the #lad (Linux audio developer's channel.

 See:

 Adjust /etc/security/limits.conf

 This might have entries like:
 @audio - rtprio 95
 @audio - memlock 512000
 @audio - nice -19

 It is quite possible/probably some library TamTam is using is either
 renicing  the tamtam process, or setting real time priority.

 Please try this out and see, and see if it is just renicing, or using the
 real time scheduling facilities.

 We can make the OLPC user part of an "audio" group.
