 X still crashes even if nothing is plugged into the adapter, so I think
 the keyboard/mouse does not matter. (and /proc/bus/input/devices still
 lists two extra devices even if nothing is plugged into the adapter)

 The adapter is a "microlight PS121". It looks the same as
 http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-to-PS-2-Adaptor-2-port-PS2-keyboard-and-mouse-
 nls_W0QQitemZ200071998166QQcategoryZ3678QQcmdZViewItem
 except color.

 The adapter works in X if it is plugged _after_ X starts (also works under
 console).
