 A simple short-term solution is running the program as root; this is not
 at stake. What was at stake is finding a long-term solution, and having
 that be 'run it as root' doesn't just fill me with concern -- it's
 outright not an option, unless you wish to undo the rest of the security
 on the machine. Chris chose to use the word 'veto' for this, and that's
 reasonably accurate.
