 Setting HZ to 1000 greatly improves the audio performance to the point
 where skype might be usable.  I still have artifacts where the audio will
 be mostly ok, but then briefly break up into high frequency static.  OSS
 is still much better than ALSA.  Under ALSA I get audio dropouts as well
 as the static.

 In general moving HZ to 1000 seems to put the cpu in overdrive.  pystone
 reports 10570.8 pystones/second with this setting.
