 Eww... I scrambled the line breaks there.

 Anyway, as correctly noted by Mercury, the above output shows that the
 touchpad is working fine after the rmmod;modprobe. And indeed, X starts up
 just fine now.

 Maybe next time this failure occurs I can be quick enough to get the
 relevant dmesg output before it's scrolled into oblivion.
