 My comments were misunderstood.  I did not advocate using the DHCP
 provided hostname.  I advocated using DHCP to advertize the hostname when
 requesting an IP address.

 At the laptop software level, this is equivalent to Dan's suggestion: set
 the hostname locally, but the DHCP client request should include 'send
 hostname "<nickname>"'.
