#941: hostname localhost.localdomain

Comment (by dcbw):

NetworkManager doesn't respect the DHCP-provided hostname for the exact
reason Jim mentions, that it historically completely broke X and caused
any app . I just tried changing my hostname on FC6, and it appears to
work correctly now, so we should test on the XOs themselves too.

 1) if we repsect DHCP-provided hostname, kids will get a different
hostname (or none at all) if they ever connect to a non-school
 infrastructure network.

 2) if the child changes laptops because their other one broke, then
there's administrative overhead to matching MAC address to DHCP hostname.
Better to do this at a higher layer than DHCP, perhaps when the laptop
talks to the server and does the key exchange, since the keypair is the
only way we can conclusively identify the child. Some process on the
laptop (NM perhaps) can then set the hostname to what the server says.

 My suggestion:

Trial 1/2/etc: set the hostname locally based on nickname and something
else, ignore DHCP hostname if any

Later: when we have a better idea of the network infrastructure, revisit
 the hostname issue conclusively
