 You need CONFIG_E1000 and maybe CONFIG_PCNET32.

 I'm not about to compile a kernel on a B2 OLPC XO, and my other machine is
 PowerPC, so I really can't say anything useful about the size. Network
 drivers are usually quite small, perhaps a couple dozen kilobytes each.

 Maybe you could put emulator-related drivers in the ext3 images, and XO
 drivers in the jffs2 images.
