 I've always thought that backlight control, volume control, and keyboard
 illumination lights (which is what I think he was referring to) should all
 be lower level -- I was thinking a system daemon at least, but maybe even
 bios level.  It's very annoying not to be able to mute sound or adjust
 brightness because the system is under load.
