 This "partial replication" seems much more likely to succeed in practice.

 Having watched NN for over a year, I predict demands to make the firmware
 look nicer, etc, that will be unlikely to be ignored; but given this
 asymmetric idea, I suspect we can (eventually) do something here for
 firmware recover.
