#978: Firmware recoverability and security

Comment (by wmb at firmworks.com):
Lilian sent me the preliminary release of the wireless code today. The
ROM footprint is:
WLAN driver: 17K
WIFI supplicant: 20K
USB8388.bin (Marvell firmware), compressed: 77K
(Total 114K)
The firmware wad is currently at 292K, so with the wireless wad plus a
startup sound, we are looking at 456K. That is cutting it really close
for replicating.
An assymmetric approach would probably be better. We could have a smaller
recovery version of the firmware that only supports, for example, loading
the recovery image from SD. We could omit all the USB class drivers and
wireless stuff, leaving less than 250K. Even that could be cut down quite
a bit, perhaps to 150K or so, without too much effort, if it were
necessary.
