 yes.

 laptop serial number is good.

 mac address is good.

 IP might be good, but I would prefer the client figures it out before dhcp
 so that it can send it to the server.  the server can do whatever it wants
 with it, including send back a new one, which the client on OLPC can also
 chose to ignore.

 given that login name isn't uniquue, I would only use the login name
 appened to any of the above to make visual recognition easier.
