 Sorry, my mistake; the pop is at mixer setup.  The line in mixer setup
 that causes the pop seems to be:

                 /* nothing should be in powerdown mode */
                 snd_ac97_write_cache(ac97, AC97_GENERAL_PURPOSE, 0);

 Does that make sense?
