Comment (by jayakumar):

The 0x7e id reg readback failure is a known issue:
 [ 22.583429] Failure reading codec reg 0x7e,Last value=0x7e805368
 [ 22.583614] Failure reading codec reg 0x7e,Last value=0x7e805368

This error has been consistent since A-test. This doesn't happen with the
other registers or the other realtek codecs that I've tested with, and I'm
told also not with Wolfson codecs. Luckily though, the last value that the
codec asserts is the correct value. The 0x5368 correctly identifies the
codec as AD1888 although for some reason, the complete signal never
asserts. I think it would be useful to scope the AC97 bus to identify why
that's the case or ask ADI support about it.

The modprobe issue is new to me.

 [ 120.740739] Failure reading codec reg 0x7c,Last value=0x72800000

It seems similar to #1264. Needs some looking into.
