Comment:

 I recreated the problem with cairo 1.4.4.  The test app has been attached.
 This only happens at 16bpp - 24 bpp still works fine.    The purple/pink
 is because we were not converting the
 source color before the operation - that part is fixed.  But I'm still
 dealing with strangness in the mask

 I solved the color part of the problem, but now I'm dealing with strange
 behavior in the mask at 16bpp - that part needs yet to be solved.
 Reassigning to myself since I have a test case I can use.
