 With newer kernels, the output from init scripts is completely mangled.
 This appears to be a UTF-8 issue; the init scripts do not use a UTF-8
 font, and the following kernel patch seems to have broken something
 related to that:

 We need to figure out whether that patch is broken, or whether we're doing
 something incorrect with our console fonts.
