 I think this decision was made because color mode really didn't provide
 much with the backlight off; it appeared nearly grayscale anyway.  I don't
 think this should necessarily be the only way to toggle b&w mode.  We'll
 probably want a global preference which can be toggled for accessibility
 reasons.  I'm unsure if we actually need a quicker or more temporary means
 of toggling this mode that is independent of the backlight.

 I'll need to better understand some of the possible use cases.
