 starts as blank white, then gets an image icon, then switches to a text
 icon. It isn't openable and creates an un-resumable entry entitled
 "Clipboard object '.'" when I select add to journal.

 Erik, I didn't managed to copy a photograph with Ctrl+C in image 19.
 Please look at the shell.log, clipboard.log and the respective sources as
 they give quite a bit of error and debug messages that can shed some light
 on these kind of issues.
