Comment:

 It's very incosistent. With some devices I can reproduce it consistently.
 Some others always works correctly and finally some works only sometimes.
 I uploaded a log of hald --verbose=yes

 http://dev.laptop.org/~marco/hal.log

 These lines are interesting:

 13:38:09.967 [E] util.c:190: Cannot open
 '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0f.5/usb1/1-2/1-2:1.0/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/type'
 13:38:09.968 [I] device.c:2082:
 /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0f.5/usb1/1-2/1-2:1.0/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/type
 -> -1080506024 (-> scsi.type)

 And later:

 13:38:11.453 [I] blockdev.c:856: block_add: sysfs_path=/sys/block/sda
 dev=/dev/sda is_part=0, parent=0x080c5790
 13:38:11.454 [I] blockdev.c:1216: parent_bus is scsi
 13:38:11.455 [W] blockdev.c:1255: scsi.type is unknown
 13:38:11.455 [W] blockdev.c:1416: Not adding device object

 Though I see to be able to cat the type file in sysfs just fine (it's 0).
 Race?
