Comment (by Eben):

 This is in conflict with the fundamental metaphor we're using on these
 machines, which depends on multi-instance support. Furthermore, I would
 say that part of the purpose behind the multi-instance model is to both
 represent individual objects within their own instances, blurring the
 distinction between files and applications as separate entities, and also
 to provide system-wide support for session saving. If having two
 instances of the new reader open at once creates database conflicts, then
 I'd say the interface isn't properly tuned to having unique instances;
 Syncing the contents of both running instances shouldn't be a concern,
 because if they're identical they are serving no purpose. Instead, a
 model akin to the browser design should be followed, saving separate
 sessions with separate feeds as groups of articles, or something similar.

 Though the metaphors are quite different on the XO, I don't think we have
 can make concessions about them, since consistency is the one thing that
 will make them strong.
