The 6c EC timeouts are under investigation. The core of the problem is
that sometimes the OBF flag is not cleared. EC debug logs indicate that
the code path that clears this flag is followed and the flag only ends up
uncleared intermittently. So I suspect there is some EC quirk about
clearing these flags thats not yet understood.

The next release of OFW and newer kernels will not treat this as a fatal
error and will retry the command. Re-trying will reset the flag state and
the command will probably succeed on the next try.

Re-assiging to me since I re-wrote the EC 6c protocol code to support our
 new protocol.
