 Really?  As I understand it, the red, octagonal stop sign is part of the
 UN international traffic sign convention.  In particular, the wikipedia
 page on the subject shows it in use throughout South America, Asia, and
 the Middle East, in addition to North America and Europe.  African
 countries are notably missing from the list; it's not clear if this is
 because no one has added them or because the sign is not used there.
 Random internet searches imply the sign is used in Nigeria and South
 Africa, at least.  The wikipedia page only mentions Japan and Israel as
 countries that use notably different signs (and in Israel's case, the
 difference appears to be that it uses a picture instead of text inside of
 the octagon).
