Comment (by gnu):

 I replaced the SDHC card with an SD card (empty except for the autoinstall
 stuff). Power cycled. Got a very strange result. It noticed that no
 reflashing was needed, then booted Linux. Linux screen is all black
 except for four and a fraction lines of text, about four lines down from
 the top:

 {{{
 [    16.063634] input: OLPC PM as /class/input/input0
 [ ... input: OLPC lid switch as /class/input/input1
 [ ... input: OLPC ebook switch as /class/input/input2
 [ 16.065601] SCI is mapped to IRQ 3
 }}}
 then the top few pixels of the next line -- unreadable.

 Power cycled and tried again.

 This time the kernel boots, says `mmcblk0: mmc0:b368 SD 196044KiB
     mmcblk0: p1
 JFFS2 notice ....[long msg]`
 then system hangs.

 Power cycled, tried again. Boots kernel, same mmcblk messages. Then
 JFFS2 notice.  Then says
 unmounting root (take a long time). Then "Could not activate this XO.
 Serial number SHF000000000".

 I think we have too many bugs here to be able to figure out what's really
 going on.
