Comment:

 SJ:  nothing goes in without:

 1) its size.
 2) the dependencies required and their size
 3) a discussion of alternatives.

 While I think I'm convinced we need some way to get to conventional IM
 systems available  for remote support (either on the laptops or better on
 the server as a gateway), irssi has a perl dependency (at least as built),
 that then pulls in tons of stuff. That makes it a non-starter on footprint
 grounds, independent of one's language religious beliefs.

 Please investigate this topic.
