Comment:

The latest round of mesh designs takes much of this discussion into
account. Since this is an interface-design ticket I'm closing it until
the new designs have been implemented and we can evaluate their
effectiveness. I'm attaching a PDF which reveals much of the new visual
 design.

 Some highlights:

  - XOs present on the mesh are colored; XOs whose signals are intermittent
or recently dropped are gray outlines
  - APs are rendered as circles, with their strength represented by the
 fill
  - APs receive the color of an XO who is connected to it: Your colors if
you are directly connected and serving as an MP, or the colors of an MP on
the mesh otherwise. Each AP is represented only once.
  - Star badge indicates favorited (previously visited) APs
  - Lock badge indicates encrypted APs
  - Ring badge indicates APs which are out of direct range, but accessible
via the mesh through an MP
  - Grouping is used to represent virtual topology according to activities

Dan & Marco - feel free to reopen or simply start another ticket for
 implementation.
