 The search field design calls for a small magnifying glass icon embedded
 in the left of the text field.  If this is possible without too much
 effort, let's jump straight to that implementation.  If not, we need to
 shrink the search field by just a bit to allow the same icon to be
 positioned just before it in the toolbar.  Without this icon or the
 placeholder "search journal" text, there is no indication of its purpose.
