 Ugh - we had a serious regression.  My 505 xorg.conf reported this:

 Option     "FBSize" "8388608"

 Thats just not enough room to be rotating around.  Somebody needs to put
 it back to 16M (also, Sugar runs faster when more pixmaps are in memory).
