#2023: Rethinking the escape icon

Recent developments have me second-guessing the escape icon. While it
seemed to make sense to associate it with the close action (customarily an
'x'), that might actually be a little bit too strong. Additionally, the
highly discussed and never formally resolved issue of overloading the left
mouse button with an 'x' greatly complicates things, as it's a bad idea
from an interaction design perspective to have multiple (actually, 3:
mouse button, letter, esc) keys with the same description.

For these reasons, I'm contemplating the possibility of reverting to the
generally accepted esc icon (attached) - the circle with the arrow
pointing out and to the upper left. We could still maintain consistency
with accept/cancel dialogs by placing this alternate icon in the cancel
 button instead of the 'x'.

Finally, even with the zoom level buttons right there, the corner button
is much easier to hit, and I find myself instinctively trying to get back
to the home screen by way of the escape key - I suppose that's because
that's how we generally leave fullscreen views. I'm not sure that's
actually a good plan or not, but this would make that a more logical
possibility, since it wouldn't be confused with the more extreme "stop" or
 "close" action.
