Comment:

 I think this is some kind of unwanted screensaver that got dragged in with
 the switch to Fedora 7.  Perhaps something like DPMS is happening and
 kicking the signal away from the DCON, which switches to showing
 framebuffer garbage.

 Reassigning to distro/J5, and CC'ing ajax.  Any ideas?
