X's acceleration stuff literally dates from about 1985. It could use a
serious revamp. There is some chance that a student of Ted Selker's at
the MIT Media Lab will undertake this. I've had one discussion with this
student, but encouraging him would be good, and it is always helpful to
have someone to bounce things off of.
I'm not too worried about the patent issues: Ted, whom I've corresponded
with on this one, did not raise it, and IBM is quite friendly to open
source. Unless/until it is determined that we should use something
related to the track-point algorithms (and that isn't entirely clear with
a touch pad that we should, and the student is Ted's), I think it should
be full steam ahead. If there does end up being such an issue, I'm happy
to go talk to IBM about it.
If you want to work on the problem with Ted and his student, I'd be happy
to send an introduction to tie you all together.
