 A few notes from a UI perspective:  I think we'd prefer to do without the
 outline stroke on the ring segment.  If we really do need something with
 more visual strength we'll sketch up some new ideas.  Additionally, we'd
 like to see the separations between the ring segments be a bit more
 distinct.  If those are implemented as outline strokes in the color of the
 background, maybe just bump the weight up by 75% or so.
